We had been talking about creating a food and gardening blog for quite a while before it became a reality. Emily enjoys photography and eating while I love cooking and vegetable gardening. Our goal was to create a business that would have a positive impact on our family and our community. The problem with starting most businesses is they are expensive!
Neither of us had any knowledge of computers or creating websites. Emily created a blog for her photography business a year ago and started stumbling through the process of creating content online. One thing we learned quickly was there is a lot of places to turn for help online that do not cost an arm and a leg.
So…How did we start Blogging with Apples? It was actually a birthday present to myself in September of 2014. I had really become anxious to start a business we could run ourselves from our home. Our third little maniac Alice had just been born and family time was already crunched with work, school and our other commitments. Amazingly buying a website and starting a blog is not an expensive proposition. The first thing you need is a website and hosting. We purchased our hosting through Bluehost and got our website for free. You enter the website name you want and if it is available you can purchase hosting for as little as $4.95 per month and they will register the name for free! This is what the sign up screen looks like…
The process was so easy I didn’t have time to doubt my decision!
Now that you own a website it is time to get to work creating your blog. We use WordPress to create Blogging with Apples which is free software available to download in your Bluehost account. Once you are logged into Bluehost look in the software section and click on the WordPress icon to download and install. Once you download and get logged in you have access to the WordPress back end of your website to start creating content, pages, and posts.
The next step in creating Blogging with Apples for us was choosing a theme. The theme will be the blueprint you create everything in that makes all the pages and layout look the same. There are a number of free themes available in WordPress but we chose an inexpensive theme purchased through StudioPress. Different themes will be suited to different types and sites and blogs. We chose the Foodie Pro theme on StudioPress because of it high ability to customize the sites layouts and functions. We couldn’t be happier with our choice of theme. StudioPress provides great tutorials for getting your site up and running and the How To’s on a number of things that were very far over our heads when we started this process.
Now armed with a website, software to create content, and a theme to put the content into there was one last resource that was vital to us getting our site up and running. A Food Blogger Pro subscription. This was the single best purchase I made in starting the website. The service is loaded with information and video tutorials on everything you would ever need covered while starting, building, maintaining and perfecting a blog. Without this subscription I am fairly certain I would have become far too frustrated starting the site to continue. This site makes the most complicated website issues easy to handle. I used the video tutorials to setup Analytics to view website data, create images to upload to the website, setup email with “email@example.com” address, find out which plugins were the best to setup on website, and a host of other things. For someone starting with an extremely limited knowledge of website creation this service is invaluable.
Now with the software and knowledge available to you all you need to do is create interesting unique content that you love! We have loved this process because we are passionate about growing our food, home cooking, photography and being together at home. You can do the same for something you love! And if you do please let us know about it! 🙂
